The European Union or EU, as it is commonly known, symbolizes not only the importance of blurring unnecessary differences for achieving a greater good but also reposes trust on human unity, love and peace. Although the name European union came into existence only in 1993 with the ‘Masstricht Treaty’ on European Union, its origin can be traced back to 1950s when Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the six members of European Coal and Steel Community began to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace. Today, the European Union is a strong community of 25 member countries having a common currency called Euro. The EU has also developed over the years. Various political and economic institutions have been set-up to streamline its areas of co-operations among almost half a billion population. The growing significance of the European Union both as a political and economic powerhouse has attracted various other European countries to seek its membership. Therefore, it can be expected that the EU would only become bigger and more powerful in the coming years. The success of European Union would lie not only in bringing peace and harmony in the region, but also in managing and maintaining its rich cultural heterogeneity.

Europe is the second-smallest continent on the earth, spread over an area of 10,180,000 sq km, which makes up for 2% of the earth's total surface area.
