Egypt is often popularly known as the “cultural capital of the Arab world” for its host of theaters, cinema halls, operas and a huge variety of modern cultural institutions. There are many
theaters in Egypt, which contribute to the cultural diversity of the country. Some of the most popular
theaters in Egypt include the Pocket Theater, the Egyptian Museum of Modern Art, Cairo Opera House, the National Symphony and the National Puppet Theater.
The Opera House at the Gezira Exhibition Grounds in Cairo was inaugurated in October 1988. The Opera House is surrounded by other Egyptian cultural centers like Nile Gallery, El Hangar Theatre and Plastic Artists’ Association. The Opera House was planned by Japanese and Egyptian architects. It is a seven-storey building, which has the fully equipped modern audio-visual systems and is the best place to view classical music and ballet performances. The Egyptian Museum of Modern Art exhibits a collection of 10,000 sculptures and paintings, which trace the development of Egyptian art. The Roman Theater in Alexandria was built in the 4th century A.D and now mainly stores remains and historical artifacts of various places and monuments. A new stage has been constructed in front of this Theater so that modern day productions, plays and musical pieces are performed with the ancient Roman Theater serving as the background.
Theaters of Egypt have an old-world charm and ethnic flavor, which makes them unique in the whole world.
