The Great Sphinx of Egypt is a big statue having half-lion and half-human features. It is located on the Plateau of Giza at the western bank of the River Nile and is quite close to the capital city of Cairo. Great Sphinx is indeed one of the biggest statues in the world that is curved out of a single stone. It is probably one of the ancient monumental sculptures on earth.
There is no doubt in the fact that the Sphinx of Giza is a symbolic representation of the Egyptian essence. This marvelous Great Sphinx with a lion’s body and a human head is approximately 240 feet in length and 66 feet in height.
Presently, the Sphinx that underwent a massive modern restoration was sculpted around 4,600 years ago by the renowned pharaoh Khafre. His Pyramid is located just behind this Sphinx and it is believed that his face is curved on the Great Sphinx. However, some of the archaeologists think that this face is of a mythical creature whose primary work is to protect the dead bodies in the cemeteries encircling the Giza pyramid complex.
It is basically the symbol of awe and fear in ancient Egypt and is considered to be one the most attractive sights of the country.
