The historically eminent Czech Republic is a democratic republic that has a strong multi-party character. Mirek Topolanek is a worthy successor of Vaclav Havel, who nows holds the rank of President of the Czech Republic. A student of Opava's military school, he was a distinguished member of the Socialistic Union of Youth (SSM) during his student days. An engineer by profession, was also a member of the Senate from 1996 to 2004 and held office as its chairman from 2002 to 2004. Finally following his party's landslide victory in 2006, Topolanek was appointed as Prime Minister by President Klaus to form his government.
