The prospect of jobs in Cyprus is moderate. The inclusion of Cyprus in the European Union or the EU in 2004 has resulted in the creation of several employment opportunities. The booming tourist industry is the prime sector where jobs galore, especially during the summer months. These Cyprus jobs, though seasonal in nature, do offer employment to a section of the population for the time being. The job scenario in the Greek Cypriot is better than the Turkish north as the the economy is more developed in the former. The economy of the southern half is boosted by the tourist industry. The northern is in a state of political turmoil and instability and acquiring a job is made all the more difficult. The sorry state of affairs and the rising demand for jobs leads to tough competition in the job market.
People from other countries, however, find it difficult to acquire jobs in Cyprus. Jobs in the government are all the more difficult to come by as the local unions are quite active and vociferously support the claims of the locals. There have been instances in the past when workers from other countries had to be sent back in order to create vacancies for the citizens.
Cyprus's inclusion in the EU implies that its citizens applications for jobs in Cyprus cannot be rejected if they possess the qualifications in their native country. But the extent to which it is practically possible has not yet been ascertained. There are a number of job openings in the tourism industry for professionals from the hospitality sector as well as from the marketing sector. There are options in the education sector as well as there is a rising demand for EFL or English as a Foreign Language teachers. There is also a rising demand for construction workers.
