Cameroon History shows that the early inhabitants were the Bakas. They were followed by the Bantu speaking people. The pastoral Islamic group Fulani came to Cameroon during the late 1770s and 1800s. They occupied the northern Cameroon. The non-Muslims were subjugated from the northern part of the country.
According to Cameroon History the Portuguese came to this country in 1500s but no European settlement became possible before 1870s because malaria prevented. The major interest of the Europeans was slave trade and the northern part became an important center for this. The Christian missionaries came to Cameroon in the mid 19th century and slave trade was suppressed.
History of Cameroon reveals that the present day Cameroon and the neighboring area became the German colony of Kamerun in 1884. After World War I under the June 28, 1919 League of Nations mandate the colony gets divided between the French and the British.
Cameroon's History records the struggle of the people. Finally in 1961 the French Cameroon gained independence. The next year the northern two-thirds voted to join Nigeria while the southern third choose to join the Republic of Cameroon.
