The Republic of Benin is home to a number of African tribes of different ethnicities. All Benin people have descended from the West African tribes that made up the ancient African kingdoms in the 17th century.
Contemporary Benin people are a mix of four major tribes. The four tribes are the Fon, Yoruba, Bariba, and the Goun. Different tribes dominate the population in different parts of the country. The Fon is the largest ethnic group and makes up about 40% of the population. The Yoruba shares a common ancestry with the Nigerian Yoruba tribe. The Bariba is the country's fourth largest tribal group. The Bariba makes up a substantial portion of the total Benin population. Each ethnic group have their own distinct language. The language of communication is however, French. The Benin people Republic was the name of the country during the years from 1975 to 1989. The formal name of the West African country at that time was the People's Republic of Benin.

Benin child labor is a major problem in the West African country. Thousands of Benin children is subjected to illegal trafficking each year. Many children is illegally sent to work in neighboring countries. This problem is primarily due to the poor economic condition of the parents.
