The Republic of Belarus was a former member of the Soviet Union. The curricula taught at
Belarus schools distinctly reflect the old socialist values of the country. The courses are imparted through the Russian language.
The present government of Belarus is actively promoting the education of its citizens. Primary education is extremely affordable. This is apparent through the absolute literacy rate of the East European country. Most of the
Belarus schools are state funded and state operated. The affluent people send their children to privately funded schools in Belarus that supposedly provide a higher level of educational excellence compared to their general state funded counterparts.
There are a few nascent language schools at Belarus. The native Belarus language is not used in popular literature. This unique social phenomenon was pursued by the country's Russian rulers since the late 19th century. The practice was continued even during Soviet times. The present President of Belarus- Alexander Lukashenko also incorporated an educational policy that actively discourages the teaching and colloquial use of the native Belorussian language. This has led to the founding of some 'underground' Belorussian language schools in the capital city of Minsk as well as in other places of Belarus. There are a number of adult education schools in Belarus to foster the further intellectual growth of the populace.
